WKNC takes Indy Week top honor five years running

WKNC 88.1 FM, whose 25,000 watt signal covers the entire Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area, has once again earned Independent Weekly’s award for Best College Radio Station in its annual Best of the Triangle readers choice poll.

WKNC has taken the top honor since 2010, when the publication separated the category from best radio station into best college radio station and best commercial radio station. A category for best nonprofit radio station was added in 2011.

Other finalists for Best College Radio Station were WXDU 88.7 FM at Duke University, WXYC 89.3 FM at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and WUNC 91.5 FM, the NPR affiliate licensed to UNC-CH.

WKNC was named Best Radio Station in the Triangle from 2006 to 2008, but lost the title in 2009 to WUNC. The station has also been recognized by Independent Weekly as best college radio station and best radio for music in 2005 and best college radio in 2004.
