WKNC up for three CMJ College Radio Awards

For the first time ever, WKNC 88.1 FM has been named a finalist in College Music Journal’s College Radio Awards. Now in their ninth year, CMJ’s College Radio Music Awards honor both college radio and record industry personnel in categories ranging from Station of the Year to “Will Never Sell Out.”

WKNC secured three nominations in this year’s contest: Best Community Resource, Biggest Champion of the Local Scene and Best Taste in Music for indie rock director David Smith. WKNC shares the nomination for Best Community Resource with KUOM at University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, WPRK at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., WTBU at Boston University, and WWVU at West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va. KUOM and WTBU are also finalists for Biggest Champion of the Local Scene, along with KXLU at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles and WKDU at Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Smith’s co-nominees for Best Taste in Music among college radio are Kylie Arrieta at KRUX (New Mexico State University, Las Cruces), Sam Goldner at KVCU (University of Colorado at Boulder), Justin Lanoue at CFUV (University of Victoria, British Columbia), and Trevor Morrison at WHUS (University of Connecticut, Storrs).

WKNC’s former indie rock director John Hubbard, who now works for Terrorbird Media, was also nominated in three categories: Promoter of the Year, Best Taste in Music (Industry) and Sexiest Phone Voice.

Winners will be announced Oct. 17 during the CMJ Music Marathon. All nominees must be current subscribers of CMJ New Music Report.
