WKNC’s promotional campaign for Double Barrel Benefit 12 placed third in an annual design contest hosted by the Edmund C. Arnold Chapter of the Society for News Design at Michigan State University. Kaanchee Gandhi, a sophomore in graphic design, created the campaign, which consisted of full-size posters, newspaper ads, social media promotion and an event T-shirt.
The promotions and advertising category also featured finalists from University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, University of Texas-El Paso and Savannah College of Art and Design’s Atlanta campus.
This year’s contest garnered 310 entries in 12 categories. Judges included representatives from The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today and Ad Week.
“Radio stations aren’t typically known for their design work and a lot of design contests don’t include categories in which radio stations can enter,” Jamie Lynn Gilbert, WKNC station adviser said. “The MSU Design Contest doesn’t limit entries to those created for a student newspaper or magazine, so we are able to submit some of our work for consideration each year.”
Gandhi, who worked as a graphic designer and deputy promotions director at WKNC during the 2014-2015 year, is now the station’s promotions director. Gandhi is also editor-in-chief of the 2016 Windhover literary and visual arts magazine.
